The Surin family house presents a new, quirky, agricultural BASTARD residential type. A large pit was first dug by the owner on the piece of 14 rai property in downtown Surin (a rural town on the eastern border of Thailand. After two years, underground water seeped from below to fill the void. A beautiful, natural new lake was created, with its own ecology of fish, birds, reptiles, and local plant life. The lake would serve as the water supply to a newly created canal fruit farm (the traditional Thai "rong suan"), a landscape architecture based on a traditional agricultural typology.
The Surin family complex is simply comprised of three modest-sized open-air houses linked by a circular walkway... the family's natural "treadmill ring" that allows them to exercise with nature.
A 2-meter berm surrounds the walkway and completely hides the lake from those on the outside of the embankment. Thus the lake becomes a private "room" in the house...
The lake is the heart of the house and fruit garden. it waters the plants, it stores the rain, it cools the property, and is home to the local wildlife...it is the family's living room.
